React Public Performances is a performance company, based in Sweden, that aims to reach people directly by performing in public spaces, therefore opening art to new audiences. Dance, movement, theatre and circus can be seen as the main artistic tools used to create playful, creative and interactive performances.
React is also an intercultural company with members originally from Sweden, Finland, France and Portugal.
What’s our mission?
The main mission of React is to raise questions about the rules shaping behavior in public spaces. The aim is to create situations that give an opportunity for people to question both the limits of these public spaces and how they follow the spoken and unspoken rules.
We want our work to be an entry point into performing arts for new audiences as well as an original experience for expert ones.
Since 2011 React has created for public spaces such as libraries, squares, subways, elevators, and cultural centers, and has performed in several festivals and events, mostly in Sweden but also in France, Finland, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Portugal. Some highlights are Passage Festival 2017, 2018 and 2021 (Dk/Se), Festival ET 20 L’ÉTÉ 2014 and 2016 (Fr), Spoffin Festival 2018 (Nl), Festival La Strada Bremen 2019 (De), Flow Festival 2015 (Fi), Aurillac 2016 (Fr), Festival Mimos 2016 (Fr), Halmstad International Street Theater Festival 2015 and 2021 (Se), Dansens hus (Se) and Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Stockholm (Se).
React is part of Scensverige and supported by Region Stockholm. Its creations have been supported by Kulturrådet, Kulturbryggan, PostkodLotteriets Kulturstiftelse, Skåne Region, and others.
What triggers us to create?
The rules that conduct our lives in society are what triggers our creations. These rules can sometimes be constraining to our critical thinking and shut down the need for us, as people, to be aware and to stay connected to each other and our environment. Therefore, we question and challenge ourselves in our relation to the public spaces and to its inhabitants. With our performances we invite people to open themselves up for surprises, to raise questions and to rethink the patterns of daily life.
What makes us different?
We are different from other site specific companies both in our methods and in our artistic approach to public space.
In terms of artistic approach, our main characteristic is that we work with and from both the physical space and the social space. For example, all libraries are different in their architecture, but all of them share the same function and social space. For that reason, we take into account the individuality of each space but mostly focus on the characteristics of the social space. If site specific, we should be considered a social site specific company.
We aim not to disrupt the function nor the flow of the spaces in which our performances take place. Our goal is to invite interactions rather than force them. We play with our audience and their reactions bringing playfulness to our movement and social relations.
On another level we also want to question and challenge the rules of a performance as a social space, the relation between the audience and the performer. All of our performances have a live negotiation where we establish a new agreement with each new audience: “What am I allowed to do? What are you allowed to do?”
We do not consider the performance the final result of the work but as part of the experimentation and exploration. We have a constant drive to find new possible solutions regarding our relations to the space and the audience. Only when shared with an audience does our work make sense and can start to be improved and deepened. Each meeting with an audience generates a unique performance.
